Winter fishing in Kelowna

Okanagan Lake doesn't close in winter. Here's what to expect from a cold-weather Kelowna fishing charter.

Does Okanagan Lake freeze?

No. Okanagan Lake is too deep and too long to freeze over — surface ice rarely forms even in the coldest winters. That means fishing is open 12 months a year.

What we run in winter

Two things, mostly: quiet Okanagan Lake cruises on bluebird days when the wind lays down, and Shuswap Lake burbot trips for guests who want something different. Burbot are a freshwater cod that feeds aggressively in cold water — caught by jigging weighted, lit jigs tight to the bottom in 80–150 ft.

What's different

  • You have the lake to yourself — crowds are zero
  • Heated cabin onboard matters (and we have one)
  • Trip length is usually 4–6 hours, not 8 — cold drains energy
  • Rate is still from $350

What to wear

Full winter layering: insulated jacket, wool socks, beanie, gloves, windproof outer. See our clothing guide.

When to book

We run winter charters Dec–March on request. Morning trips are typical; we launch after the frost burns off and fish the warmest window of the day.
